Tell me a little about yourself and your family:

“I’m a 26-year-old Cuban American girl born in Miami. I’ve lived in Orlando, Colorado, Cape Coral, Miami and of course now in Tampa. I’m engaged to a wonderful man named Leo. We have a beautiful happy boy named Dominic who is 18 months old and our handsome four legged family member-a pup named Tank . I love to get out and do anything fun with Dominic or the family. I also love visiting my family in Cape Coral. When we get time together my fiancé and I love to binge watch TV shows, so I’ll take recommendations for a good show any day (laughs)!”

Tell me about your business:

DJG Creations is my craft business that I started just under a year ago. It will be a year this January! I make all kinds of things-custom shirts, decals for anything, wood signs, paper crafts, gender reveal baseballs, personalized Christmas ornaments, etc. I just keep adding more items, wherever my imagination takes me!”

What made you decide this was the right business for you? What do you enjoy most about having this business?

“I’ve always been very into crafting ever since I was young. What I enjoy most about it is that I do creative projects right from my home with Dominic right by my side. I stay at home with my son and this business fits into my schedule as a full time mom. My fiancé loves everything I do, he’s my biggest fan. And it’s also something I that I enjoy doing for myself, everyone has something that they do for themselves like going to the gym or going running, this is my thing.”

What are some of the challenges you face in your business?

“I have to say not having enough hands (laughs). Most orders come in waves, one week no one needs anything and then the next week I have like 12 orders at once. But I love it, this business keeps me busy.”

What are your goals as you continue with this business?

“My goal is to grow my business bigger. As of now I just have family and friends who support my small business. I think many people don’t know the amount of things I can make, so I’m trying to build up my business page as much as I can to let everyone know how many things are possible with my creativity and my cutting machine. I also don’t think many people know that I do my wooden signs from scratch. I buy the wood, cut it, sand it, it and stain it before I paint any design on it. I want to continue to share these projects I’ve done to show my clients just how many options there are with DJG.”

Is there a current item you’re making right now that you’re loving in particular?

“Wood signs. I love to paint them and love the look that they add to homes. Home decor is a passion of mine and so I’m happy to make these wood signs to help people decorate their homes in a personal way. I always feel so happy after I finish a wood sign!”

If you were offered a helping hand in any aspect of your life, what would you choose?

“Maybe someone to help market my business better than I can, I’m still learning. I would probably also choose a helping hand making hundreds of wood signs! There is a lot that goes into the making of these custom signs and during the steps of the creation process I often could use another set of hands!”

How do you envision the Christmas season going for the shop? Do you have a plan with it being your first Christmas in business?

“With it being my first Christmas with the business, I’m not sure what to expect, so no plan for now. I’m just going to wing it! I usually get my orders done pretty fast. Because Christmas is my favorite holiday, I’m going to add to the festive spirit with a raffle contest on the shop’s Facebook page for my customers to enter. This Christmas season I’ll be making lots of personalized ornaments and Christmas porch signs along with Santa sacks and some Christmas shirts for sure. I’m really excited about the items that will be available!”

What has surprised you about motherhood? What gives you the most joy and the most challenge?

“Oh boy, here comes the emotional part. What has surprised me about motherhood would have to be the amount of love you feel. I never knew I could love anyone as much as I love Dominic. And everyone tells you ahead of time how it’s the BEST but you just have to experience it on your own to really know how right they are. I never believed in love at first sight until I saw Dominic. I’m literally obsessed with him. His smile and laugh gives me the most joy. Oh and his kisses, I can’t forget about those amazing kisses he gives every day.

The most challenging thing I’ve experienced so far in motherhood is probably when Dominic isn’t feeling well. When he is sick with a cold and congested, there’s only so much I can do to help him. I feel helpless when he cries because he so congested. Which also leads to the challenge of teething, he gets congested with every tooth that comes in.”

How would you feel if Dominic decides when he’s older that he wants to do what you do? What advice would you give him?

“I mean hey, there’s many men doing crafty stuff out there! Maybe he could make farmhouse doors and tables which would be creative while making a great income. I would definitely tell him that if he’s going to do this kind of stuff to make sure to go big, not just as a hobby. And yeah- I’m always down for a family business that includes my son!”

What are some of your holiday traditions as a family? Are there any new traditions you’d like to start? Anything you’re looking forward to the most?

“Not sure if this a tradition that everyone does but in our family we usually wake up to do presents first and then we enjoyed some of our presents for a while. After that we get dressed and have a family dinner. This Christmas I look forward to my son, Dominic, understanding a little bit more than last year when he was only seven months. We are looking forward to taking him to go see Christmas movies and to see a whole bunch of Christmas lights.

A new tradition I am going to start is to do a Santa key so Santa can open the door because we don’t have a chimney. Another tradition we’re starting is to put out some reindeer food on the lawn, that’s something my parents never did with me that I want to do with my son. I think I still have a couple of years for Elf On The Shelf but when the time comes we will definitely take part in that tradition too!”

I want to say a big thank you to Samantha for sharing her business with us today. If you’d like to see even more of the amazing items in her shop you can find DJG Creations on the shop’s Facebook page or on Instagram @djgcreations15.

Christmas is a time for magic! I’m looking forward to sharing some more ideas with you in the next few weeks for creating some extra magic this December! Will the ideas be complicated? Of course not! Stay tuned for gift ideas, Trees, and general Elf-ing! Janet
