Hi friends, welcome back to Give Me The Details! School is firmly back in session which means my kids have a set schedule again! Now it’s time for mama to try to get back to a daily schedule too. A couple of weeks into this school year and what I know is that in our house it may be quieter during the day but the chaos is still in full effect everywhere I look! I’m realizing (and maybe you’re finding this too) that I can’t get on a schedule until I get a bit more organized. I need a more organized desk, the kids need a homework station, my pantry needs some major help..where to begin?
I’m not sure if I’ve ever been accused of having an organized home..clean home..occasionally. Organized? Hardly ever! Many things have entered a black hole never to be seen again in our home. Sometimes things do reappear but hardly ever when they are needed! I reached out to Sarah Doering, owner of Simplicity Organizing Solutions to get some tips on how to get started and also how to maintain what I want to do.
I’m stepping into September one step at time with the goal of doing a little every day to change the flow of how this place runs. The goal is to also see how I can get the most of out of my day too. I would like to start this step by hearing a little about Sarah, her business and what goes into getting spaces into order. Let’s hear from her:
Tell me a little about yourself and your business :
“I was born and raised in Tampa and I’m recently engaged to Matthew Brown. I love animals and riding horses. I enjoy pretty much all physical activity and I love love my job!
My business is Simplicity Organizing Solutions LLC. It was founded in December 2014. My business services families and small businesses. I offer declutter and organizing services. My favorite spaces to organize are pantries, master closets and garages.”
How long have you had this business?
“I have had this business almost 4 years. I started my business right after college. I majored in entrepreneurship and finance, while a student I nannied for families in Tallahassee and that is where the vision for Simplicity was born.”
What made you decide to get started and how long did you think about doing so before you did?
“A mentor of mine said you will never have a time with less risk-no children, husband or debt… she said do it now! And so I did.
Best advice I have ever received!”
Do you have any advice for a fellow woman getting started in a new business?
“Find your passion and make it your profession. Resist the pressure to invest money in every opportunity. Invest your time, you are the brand.”
What challenges have you faced in your business?
“You work crazy hours to begin with. Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs, no one else will understand the high highs and the low lows of self-employment. Don’t give up and be adaptable. I’m currently scaling the business through my employees. I love my girls but this is a whole new expense and set of risk. I have lots to learn.”
What are some benefits of what you do?
“I love organizing. The best part is that my team and I get to start and finish a project every day. What other business can say that? I get to see a project transformation every single day! It doesn’t get better than that!”
What are your goals as you continue?
“I’d like to establish a healthier work life balance. There is much more to life than work and success!”
Can you share a memory of your biggest accomplishment doing what you do:
“Completing a client’s organized move in less than 20 hours was a huge accomplishment-decluttering, packing, moving, unpacking, organizing and staging the home. The client had a stress-free move and was established in their new space in one day. I also have great memories of phone calls from FOXNews, channel 8 and ABC wanting to have us on the air.”
Who inspires you? Who do you look up to in business?
“My father is a business owner. He has run his dental practice for 30+ years in Tampa! He is the most positive person I know! My parents have never doubted me and support my happiness. It is the biggest blessing I could ask for.”
What is something others wouldn’t guess about the behind the scenes of your business?
“We find some interesting things sometimes😊. People just forget what they have. We are professionals and we can find a home within your home for any items that you own as long as you need it.”
Are there any current services you provided that you enjoy doing in particular?
“Pantries are an easy and exciting space to transform. I also love a messy office. They are time consuming but what good is a messy office? You may as well shred the papers and start over. If you email me I’m happy to share a copy of my vital document checklist to locate the important paperwork.”
Sarah’s 7 Tips to Start Organizing your home:
1. Begin with small projects. Start with one closet and choose one category. In the master closet this may be hats. Gather all the hats and donate the ones you don’t use or need. The next day pick another category-for example shoes. Decide what you need and what is useful to you and donate the rest.
2. Less is more…it is true. Living with only what you need will allow you to keep up the systems with ease.
3. Ask yourself the three questions-is it useful, do I need it, does it bring me joy? If the answer is not yes to all three of these questions let the item go.
4. Give everything that you own a home and follow through!
5. Label, label, label. In the long run this will save you so much time. Not only that it will keep you family accountable to the new systems.
6. Set aside time each week to put away those items that have not made it back to their home.
7. Practice self-control with online and in store purchases. Ask yourself, do I really need this item?
