Hey moms, welcome back!! Ready to get inspired with me again? I’m always ready for some inspiration!! I love this “in her own words” series and it brings me such pleasure to share it here with you. Ever heard that quote “Here’s to those that inspire us and don’t even know it”..well today’s mom is one of those people for me.
Ann Brock is one of the coolest people I’ve never met (true- we’ve actually never met but squad goals), she is someone who you’d want to be your friend, your neighbor or a fellow class mom at school. She is a homeschooling mother of two, a wife, and a supporter of others. Ann wants everyone to succeed, this comes across immediately! She is open, kind and funny and has this amazing personality that comes out in her words as you’ll soon see.
I’ll be honest, when I heard she was in oils I thought..”Oh great yet another lady pedaling those oils.” How wrong I was! There is so much more to oils than I knew and so much more to Ann than pedaling anything at all. Come and meet her and see why you should listen. Give her 10 minutes and you will wish you were living across the street from her, she is a lady to talk to.
How many children do you have and their ages?
“I have two children ages 10 and 8.”
How long have you been a stay at home mom?
“I have been a stay at home mom off and on since my son (the eight-year-old) was born. I became a full-time stay-at-home mom in October 2017. That’s when I started homeschooling both kids and became committed to Young Living.”
Tell me about your business:
“I am a distributor of Young Living Essential Oils. This is my third year to be a member of Young living and a year and a half of that time I have taken on the business side. It was a total accidental business. Never intended to be a part of any MLM business. I was a small business owner for 12 years as a florist in Houston Texas. When we moved here to Tampa in 2015 I decided to make a change in my lifestyle because my health was not good. A friend introduced Young Living to me as an alternative way to wellness. My grandmother had used oils as long as I could remember but I had never tried them. At that point in my health I was desperate enough to try something, anything that would give me relief. So I dove in and the turnaround was so remarkable I never looked back. It’s helped me with my endocrine system, our mental health (meltdowns and focus) and those preteen years with a number of other remedies that are too many to count. It became my business because I couldn’t keep my mouth shut about them! Young living is a passion of mine in every sense of the word.
What made you decide to get started and how long did you think about it before you did?
“Deciding to start the business full-time or as full-time as a homeschooling mom can do it was a tough decision. If I’m being honest, the reason why it was a tough decision wasn’t because I didn’t love essential oils, it was because I didn’t like the network marketing industry. I also didn’t know much about it either. To me it was just a fast way for someone to make money by hassling their friends and family. I wanted no part of this, nor did I want to throw parties or have any overhead by stocking product in my home. I simply didn’t have any time for anything other than teaching my children, cleaning the house and deciding how I was going to make dinner by the end of the day. In my mind it was going to be way too complicated for me to handle until I finally realized it just wasn’t that complicated. It was stupid easy!
After being a solid customer of Young Living for over a year I was totally sold and in love with the products. I also repeatedly told my “up line” (you know those gals from Texas who talked me into the stuff) that I would NEVER and I mean never do the business side of Young Living. On the other hand, I also found myself secretly assessing everyone’s oil needs when they told me they were sick or had allergies. Eventually my language change to “I have an oil for that!” I was completely sucked in 100%. Doomed. I mean destined to hock oils for a living. Then one evening I was on the phone with the girl above the girl who signed me up (that’s MLM slang right there). I explained that I guess I was going to have to give this a try because I had no other options and well..I also need to pay for my new oil habit. So in that conversation, I casually mentioned that I needed to have a class to show my friends how cool the stuff was. The only problem was that I was still new to Tampa and all my support was in Houston. I didn’t really know what to do. This was totally new territory to me and I didn’t feel comfortable enough with teaching something that I was still learning myself. So just when I mentioned “Oh, Tara you know what would be cool? If you came to Tampa to teach the class for me.” I was totally kidding. Not even slightly serious. You can imagine how completely shocked I was when the next thing I knew, I was greeting Tara Lehr at the Tampa airport one month later ready to show me a thing or two about teaching essential oil classes.”
Why are you passionate about it?
“Bringing Young Living into my home is quite possibly one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made. Once I discovered the speed of its function, it’s limitless boundaries by addressing every system of our body and the availability in which I could take my health to a whole new level, I was all in. Essential oils have been around since the beginning of time. We just forgot about them.
Now, I can address anything going on in my home from illness to flat out emotional meltdowns. Young living had a seed to seal promise to their members. I’ve visited the lavender farms and distilleries in Utah. They are an open book with their people and you know where the product is coming from. Young Living grows all of it. They offer over 600 products and recently added make up to their lineup. You can “ditch and switch” anything in your home to live a chemical free lifestyle.
Since I have become a distributor, this opportunity has sparked another passion in me and that’s to help other women in need of financial freedom and wellness. Being part of Young Living has given me the ability to gift a business opportunity to a few single moms and friends who need wellness options and a second income. We link arm and arm and go at it together. That’s what makes all of this worth it. I can give back and it feels really good.”
Do you have any tips or advice for a fellow mom getting started?
“Ah yes…advice! I would say that with Young Living you have two amazing opportunities before you. There is an opportunity to improve your health by making a lifestyle change to something that will take your way of living in a whole new direction. Plus there is the opportunity to gain financial freedom. Our business model is simple and very low overhead. All you need to do is buy a starter kit and have the ability to make an income. It is that easy! All it takes is sharing what you love with someone you love. When you notice that someone isn’t feeling well bring them an oil to try. That’s all it is and anyone can do it.”
What challenges have you faced in your business?
“I think the challenges I have faced are so few and far between. Honestly, this has really allowed me to give a second thought to my life as a flower shop owner all those years. The flexibility this is offered and the support from my Texas friends has been amazing. Maybe the only challenge I face is that I wish people would be more open to try this out. I know it’s becoming more popular and several large name companies are jumping on the bandwagon by using the word “with essential oils” on their labels…(We’re on to you guys!) I feel that it’s my duty to educate the people that sign up under my team. I feel obligated to tell them what they are putting on their bodies and what’s safe and what isn’t. I’m not out there just to sell a starter kit and then let you figure it out on your own. If I’m this passionate about it then I’m gonna show you the ropes. It’s only fair and good business.
What have you learned about yourself and your business along the way?
“I have learned a lot about myself. This was really a surrender for me and this time in my life. I’m nearly 40 with two homeschooled kids. I left a career in a business that I work 24/7 from Houston, Texas to come to the suburbs of Tampa, Florida for my husband’s job. We knew no one here. My life did a complete 180 and I had to figure out who I was all over again. Through taking time to just be still, pray about what God’s direction was for my new life here and just putting myself out there I learned that by using the word “Networking” in Network Marketing had it’s advantages. Anyone can build a business from home and if you are truly passionate about what you are pursuing- the business side will naturally grow on its own.”
What are some benefits of what you do?
“Honestly, the benefits are too many to count. My top two would be giving my family a top-of-the-line wellness option and the second would be that I have the ability to bring my family to financial freedom. Being that I have owned a business full of risk and overhead, this has been a welcome change. Just three years ago I had a business with so many moving parts. It took years to build a business that was sustainable and it had a price. It cost me time with my family and countless hours I spent at my shop, my health was damaged from the large amounts of stress I took on daily and many people counted on me to keep them paid as well. And in that season of my life I truly loved what I did and it didn’t matter that blood, sweat and tears I had put into building something. I just did it. Now that I am in a different place with a completely different business model I see that this is a very low risk opportunity for me and what could’ve been a side “hustle” for me then. Gosh, if we would’ve known then what we know now? Right? Today, I have a very easy schedule (and I use the word schedule loosely) that I plan out monthly. I teach classes at my leisure and I just work on educating people with my passion in oils. My homeschool life isn’t interrupted, it’s only enhanced. My children have now taken on this lifestyle and thank me every time they need them. Seriously! They remember the difference between when we didn’t know about essential oils and now. They recognize that they have the power to help themselves when they didn’t before. That’s a beautiful thing!”
What are your goals as you continue?
“My goals are pretty simple. I want to help people. Plain and simple. Because I had a friend who cared enough for me to show me something pretty spectacular, I want to pay it forward. She didn’t care that I was turned off by this being an MLM business. She didn’t care that I wasn’t interested the first time when she asked if I wanted to try it out. She persisted in getting oils to me and when I finally caved because I knew she was genuine, I never looked back. Since then I have helped myself, my family and many others in discovering essential oils and the many other Young Living products. I have also helped a few friends launch their own business and they are thriving with income and good health. My goal is to help more of these women find their freedom in their health and finances. It’s so rewarding to see the product of what you invested into someone else.”
Why part time instead of full time, why was this right for your family?
“Part time is truly the only thing I have time for these days with homeschooling, however with this business the part time has a big payout. This was never set up to be a 9-to-5 career. It also is very important to us that we allow for margin in our lives so that we can spend time together as a family. We have become intentional with how we spend our time and realize balance is so important.”
Favorite thing about being a stay at home mom:
“Considering that I went from a workaholic to a stay at home mom overnight, it’s taking me a while to adapt. I had to become comfortable and OK with being here. Don’t get me wrong, I love hanging with my kids. I get to watch them grow every day. It’s quite possibly the most entertaining thing I’ve ever done. Staying at home really has been a road to personal growth for all of us and I think that has been my favorite thing. I have learned a lot about myself and I have been given a gift. It has just taken me awhile to learn how to stop and enjoy it.”
What would you want your children to know about why mom does what she does?
“That’s a good question. I think I would want them to know that there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for them. This new territory has come with a lot of sacrifices but in the end I know it will be over before I know it. They will be grownups out there trying to find their own way. I have to go to bed at night knowing I gave this parenting thing my best try. None of this is perfect. I’m sure to anyone else we look like the “hot mess express” but it’s our perfect. I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I do this to show them that no matter what craziness life hands you-moving across the country to a place with no friends or family, having to start all over again and realizing your kid’s needs have changed and you now have to homeschool to name a few. You can make life work. God will provide for you and make it different, but it will be a good different as long as you have the faith to go with it.”
Best memory of a successful moment doing what you do:
“The day I was promoted for the third time in one year since I began this journey. I work so hard to achieve this promotion and it happened. That promotion was noted as the “I’m not messing around” promotion. It was the turning point that his little fire in me to see this through wholeheartedly. Another great memory is having men and women alike reach out with their success stories in using oils. They allowed me to introduce Young Living into their lives and these testimonials are some of my best memories.”
Anything else you would like to share?
“I have learned so much in business in the past seven years. There are several different types of businesses that exist but at the core of business it’s still the same. It starts with us! Do you have the grit and hustle that it takes to push through barriers? Do you have the discipline and tenacity to build something sustainable? Business takes one thing and that’s heart. Be humble, be kind and generous. It will all come back to you in the end if you follow those three things. It took me a while to discover but I’ll never look at business the same way I did before. My heart goes out to all of the stay at home moms who are selling make up, home cleaning products, oils and fitness from their home. There is a reason behind their “why”. Support them in what they do and give it a shot. You’re helping us more than you think. It’s not just the income but it’s our confidence remembering we are still individuals who want something outside of play dates, park time, homeschooling and carpool lines. It gives us the shot in the arm we need to keep the ship afloat at home and maybe pay for that Disney vacation that costs a trillion dollars.”
I want to thank Ann so much for sharing her insight. Her last words really got me thinking about what our support of other mothers in business can really do for them. We can give that confidence, that support that is needed to a friend in a time when she really needs it while maybe discovering a new favorite product. Real food for thought, ladies!! If you are interested in talking some more to Ann you can find her on Instagram @southernlydiffused or on her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Southernly-Diffused-133888880480426/. She teaches classes monthly around Tampa and you can reach out to her to get the schedule or set up your own class.
Questions and comments are always welcome..so are gifts..just kidding. I’m here for anything you want to talk about. If you know or are someone with an inspiring story to tell please reach out and tell me about it! I’d love to hear from you!! Until the next time, my friends!! Janet
