To my readers that have been following this series-welcome back! To anyone just joining us-thank you for stopping by the blog. I’m glad you’re here! I have said this before and I’ll say it again-this series is something I could never get tired of writing about! As a new follower of my dream it is so inspiring to me personally to talk to other mothers who are also following their passion while being a full time mama.
Speaking of following your dreams and inspiring ladies, I want to introduce you to Christine Diorio. I want you to really meet her because I tell you in all honesty you should! When I was reading through our interview, my first thought was that her story and her words were exactly why I wanted to write this series. I don’t want to get too mushy on you but the beauty of her soul and her message comes out in each answer you read. She is a mom of three, wife, former attorney turned amazing photographer. This was not enough though, she has recently added life coach to her resume. All this while staying at home as full time mom to her children.
To really do her justice I talked to some people we each happen to know and I asked what should I say about Christine? What do you think is important to get across about who she is and what she does? The answers came quick, each person I asked dropped what they were doing to talk to me about her. They couldn’t say enough, I could do an entire blog just on the answers. She is respected, adored, appreciated and brings light into the lives of so many. I’m just going to share a few of my favorite highlights:
First impression of her: “She is confident, warm, friendly and passionate about she wants to do.”
As a mom-“She’s a dedicated and emotionally aware mom. She makes space for her children and their feelings. She demonstrates to accept your kids as they are.”
As a photographer-“Christine took my vision for my photos and ran with it. The finished product exceeded my expectations. Her work is a photo journal of her subject’s lives and that to me, as a mom, is priceless.”
As a life coach-” Christine doesn’t preach, she doesn’t bring judgement. You just get the sense that she wants what’s best for you so you can live your fullest life.”
As a friend-” I am honored and blessed to walk through this journey as a wife, mom and woman with her.”
As a life coach-“Christine is kind and understanding yet forthright and gives true feedback. You leave with a plan of action.”
As a friend-“She is open and honest about her feelings and her story. She thinks outside the box and helps you see the bigger picture. She is smart, passionate and dedicated.”
So please join me now as I share with you her words, unedited and unfiltered…
Tell me about your business/career:
“In 2014 with the birth of my 3rd child I walked away from my decade long career as a trial attorney to pursue my passion for photography. My job as an attorney was so stressful and I had already missed out on so much with my older two children. So in 2015 Christine Diorio Photography, LLC was born. I was looking for a way to have more time with my children, and also make a financial contribution to our family. As my business began to take off, I was introduced to the world of life coaching. It was a huge turning point for me. As someone who has transformed her life in many ways- I knew this was my calling. So in 2018 I launched my Life Coaching business as well. I believe my gift is seeing the beauty in others: whether that was as an attorney advocating for my clients in court, through my lens as a photographer or as a life coach helping women activate and live out their fullest potential.”
How many children do you have and their ages?
“Jack age 13, Ava age 11 and Izzy age 3.”
How long have you been a stay at home mom?
” 3 1/2 years.”
What made you decide to get started and how long did you think about doing so before you did?
“I truly just woke up one morning and said: I want to be a photographer. This was a little crazy because I had never so much is picked up a real camera before. But I had always been artistic (writing/singing/dancing etc.) and loved photography. So I just pursued my curiosity and took as many workshops/seminars/classes as I could. It brought me so much joy! That’s when I became pregnant with Izzy-I knew I wanted to leave the law and stay home with her. I would say that I thought about it for a good 6 months before I took the leap.”
Why are you passionate about it?
“I am passionate about helping other women see their beauty and potential so that they can learn to love themselves. 10 years ago I was nothing like the woman I am today. I was an alcoholic, in a bad marriage, 225 pounds, and riddled with anxiety. I was an attorney, but I was miserable and stressed out. In 2009 I was arrested for DUI and woke up in jail. Since I was a prosecutor at the time it was big news, and I lost my job. As humiliating an experience as it was, I truly believe it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Since that moment on the floor of the jail I completely transformed my life. I am now married to the love of my life, 160 pounds, and I’ve never had another drink since. I am at peace with myself and comfortable in my own skin. I believe this is the experience that gave me the courage to walk away from my legal career. Because I found a way out of my personal prison of self-loathing- I just want to share my story with others in the hopes that it may inspire them to change. Self-love is the way out!”
Do you have any tips/advice for a fellow mom getting started?
“Absolutely! Follow your passions, curiosity, and joy! Don’t do what others think you should do. Listen to your inner voice and just go for it! Hire a coach (a life and biz coach like me) to help you get clarity, confidence, and an action plan. Ask for help! Also- keep in mind as nice as it sounds, it is really hard to work from home with kids. It just is! Be ready for always feeling like you are neglecting something (either your work or your family).”
What challenges have you faced?
“It’s hard putting yourself out there. I also should say I moved to Tampa when I started my business from scratch and knew almost no one here. It’s taken a lot of time to get my name out there and make connections with people. NOTHING happens overnight. It takes time.”
What have you learned about yourself or your business along the way?
“I am willing to take risks and do hard things! Everyone thought I was crazy for leaving the law, but I found the courage to follow my heart. This has led me to have courage in other areas of my business and always continue to push myself to the next level.”
What are some benefits of what you do?
“As a photographer I get to help other moms celebrate the beauty and love in their lives. As a life coach I get to help other women follow their dreams! I am so lucky to share my heart in these ways!”
What are your goals as you continue?
“My goal is to go completely full time with coaching in 2019, start a podcast, write a self-help memoir of my life and ultimately start my own charity.”
Why part time instead of full time, why was this right for your family?
“Part time was the right thing to be able to be at home with the kids and just be Mom on MY SCHEDULE! Volunteer for their class events, field trips etc. To welcome them home in the afternoon and have time to hear about their day. This is my #1 priority. It has been a sacrifice financially but it was well worth it. But as my youngest is going to full-time preschool I am ready to take things to full-time starting in 2019. I will still be home with them in the afternoons though.”
Favorite thing about being a stay at home mom:
“I get to be there for that moment they walk in the door. (With my son in middle school this is invaluable). I love getting to chat with them about their day. My mom-(my hero!) had to work and was very successful, but it meant my brother and I had to go to afterschool programs which I hated!! I always wished I could just go home. I love being able to give this gift to my children.”
What would you want your children to know about why mommy does what she does?
“I would want them to know that being their mom and following my dreams were both equally important to me! And that you can have both! I want them to know it’s important to follow your heart and go for your dreams!”
Best memory of a successful moment doing what you do:
“Recently I’ve started leading self-care workshops for women’s groups, and it is a dream come true to be able to share my story and teach these practices that I am so passionate about to other women- who so desperately need it! As women, we so often put ourselves last or believe we just aren’t enough. That I may help another woman have an a-ha moment that inspires her to come back home to who she truly is and start living in alignment with her truth and power-those are the moments I live for!!!”
I want to thank Christine for sharing her story and being so beautifully open. I am proud to have shared it. Luckily I don’t have to be an impartial writer, I write a blog, so let me say for the record that I am inspired because of her. I have the desire to believe in my abilities more, I want to challenge myself and take chances. You can find her at http://www.christinediorio.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/christinedioriophotography/. Please feel free to send either of us questions or comments. I hope you’ll continue to tune into this series and the other content on the Give Me The Details blog! Janet
