Hi friends! Thank you for joining me for another installment of the moms that inspire series. I’m loving sharing these ladies with all of you. Are you inspired yet? Well, this lovely lady will absolutely do the trick! Wife, mom, owner of an amazing 6 pack she put in the work for, trainer, motivator. She is all these things and more!
Her photos and videos on Facebook alone are #goals. From showing meal prep and the beautiful food she prepares to her gorgeous family to her enviable bod! This mama motivates a gal (or fella she’s an equal opportunity motivator) to want to do another rep or eat those veggies. She also has a mantra-You only live once! (Words to live by I think).
So let’s get right to it and chat with Sandra Calkins.
Tell me about your career/business:
“I currently work part time as a personal trainer at Burn Boot Camp where I lead a group of approximately 20-50 individuals, primarily women, through a 45 minute high intensity burst training camp. I also provide nutritional guidance via our Focus meetings to help our clients achieve their nutrition/fat loss goals.”
How many children do you have and their ages?
“I have 1 child, a 2 year-old girl named Emily.”
How long have you been a stay at home mom?
“I have been a stay-at-home mom since Emily was born.”
What made you decide to get started and how long did you think about it before you did?
“I worked in corporate prior to having Emily, but always daydreamed about running my own Boot Camp someday, so I obtained my certification for Personal Training prior to getting pregnant. I trained family and friends occasionally on the side, but soon after I got pregnant decided not to make any major career changes before having Emily. After giving birth I could not bear thinking about being away from Emily and we were fortunate to be in a good enough financial position where I could stay home with her. Fast forward 10 months, I was introduced to Burn Boot Camp through a MOMS club event. After our trial I was hooked and signed up for a membership. About six months after that an opportunity to work as a support trainer opened up and I was excited to finally make the official switch to the fitness industry. I’ve been training at Burn for almost a year now.”
Why are you passionate about it?
“I have always had a passion for fitness and for helping people lead a happier, healthier life. There is no “job” more fulfilling to me although I hardly think of it as work. It’s amazing to see women achieving their goals and so fulfilling to know that you in some small way helped to make that happen.”
Do you have any tips or advice for a fellow mom getting started?
“You only live once! If there is something you are truly passionate about don’t put it off. While the kiddos are napping or out of the house use that time to come up with a game plan and chip away a little every day to make progress towards your goal. A little progress every day is better than being at at a standstill and feeling like your goal is insurmountable.”
What challenges have you faced?
“I am fortunate that I get to take advantage of the free childcare while I am training camps, but there are definitely difficult times when Emily was teething and only wanted me or if she was sick and I had to make arrangements with my husband to be home or to swap schedules with my co-workers. You just have to do the best that you can do.”
What have you learned about yourself or your business along the way?
“Don’t be afraid to try new things and get outside of your comfort zone. You might just surprise yourself with how well you “stick the landing”.”
What are some benefits of what you do?
“I get paid to do what I love! One of the best things about Burn specifically is the amazing sisterhood at Burn! I get so much support and inspiration from all the ladies there. I get to work out and work while my child is room away from me, which has been great for me as well as allowing my child to socialize with other kids (especially considering she is an only child).”
What are your goals as you continue?
“I am currently working on opening up three of my own Burn locations in Palm Harbor, Land O’ Lakes and Brandon/Valrico.”
Why part time instead of full time, why was this right for your family?
“Part time works perfectly for me as it allows Emily and I to get out of the house and do something healthy for the both of us while hubby is at work.”
What would you want your child to know about why mommy does what she does?
“I actually owe Emily for me being able to finally pursue my passion. If it were not for having her, I never would’ve had the guts to quit corporate and be in a position to see if I truly love personal training as much as I thought I would. She truly is the keystone of my life and our family.”
Best memory of a successful moment doing what you do:
“The first time I trained a camp, my boss and head trainer at Burn Westchase was literally shocked at how well I did and my “stage presence” because I was always so quiet in camp. She said I was meant to do this and was a natural.”
A big thank you to Sandra for the chat! I not only want to thank her for sharing with me..and inspiring me to stop making the I’ll go to gym tomorrow excuses but also for her support of this blog. She supported another mama before we even met and I so appreciate it!! It’s a beautiful thing that we as women can inspire and support each other without meeting..I hope you were inspired today too! Stay tuned for more amazing women in this series! Janet
